Abstract The importance of resilience for the procurement of raw materials has never been so clear as in the past 3 years when lockdowns and the events in Ukraine have strongly impacted the supply chains at global scale. The importance of sourcing materials locally is also supported by the national target for GHG emission and the strong input on GHG due to transport of materials. Thus increasing the availability of local sources performs a doubly beneficial effect on the UK manufacturing industry both on material availability and supporting the climate change actions. Preliminary data produced by Phyona and Brunel University has indicated that old colliery sites might be a potential source of REE with several hundred kilos of metals per hectare available for recovery. As these are relatively low concentrations for large areas, traditional mining methods are not cost effective as are other potential methods such as the removal of the contaminated soil and its transportation to larger plants for the leaching of the metal of interest out of the soil. This not only has a large capital cost (\>£1M/Ha), it also produces a large GHG emission. Phytomining is a cost-effective technique that can easily be applied in large areas. The commercial use of phytomining for metals such as Nickel is well known in the US and Australia, however not much research has been done on the uptake of other metals such as REE. The proposing group has preliminary data on the uptake of metals such as Lanthanum, one of the REE, within the leaves of Agrostis Tenuis, a grass of the same family as the one found in golf courses, indicating high potential for the applicability of phytomining as a REE recovery method. Compared with traditional methods phytomining is a longer process, the whole recovery of the metal might take several years. The objective of this project is to identify, select and develop REE hyperaccumulators able to accelerate the process to 12 months. Such a timeframe, in combination with the improved GHG (carbon neutral) and the cost-effectiveness (~£30k per Ha compared to \>£1M) justifies the use of phytomining in comparison with traditional methods. Furthermore, the processing method for the recovery of the metals proprietary to Phyona allows for the generation of enhanced fertilisers. The result of the process is the recovery of the metal and the regeneration of the soil creating a strong positive impact on the local environment.
