| Abstract | The next generation of Large Turbofans will feature higher bypass ratios in order to generate significant fuel burn savings through improved propulsive efficiency and as a result reduction of CO2 emissions. They are likely to be driven by a geared LP system as per the Rolls-Royce UltraFan® engine concept. Key enablers for this engine are hotter, durable and smaller core turbine technologies. Furthermore, existing direct drive engine architectures will require specific fuel consumption reduction and/or Life/Time on Wing improvement in order to satisfy likely re-engine of current wide-body aircraft programmes or improvement packages for existing Rolls-Royce Trent family engines. Low TRL and MCRL strands for novel High Pressure Stage 1 Turbine component technologies are being started and funded to address these requirements. The primary advantage of these technologies being considerable cooling flow reductions, hence, minimisation of parasitic losses in the engine cycle, delivering improvements in specific fuel consumption ( sfc ) and/or Life/Time on Wing. In order to verify that these technologies can be applied to a new product, a technically very demanding, high temperature full engine demonstration is required. |
